Viewport Objectives
Viewport I: Musicians and Their Use of Technology
- Learn about the people and procedures involved in computers and music technology
- Develop profiles of professionals and their use of computers and music technology
- Identify the sources of help for using computers and music technology in the community or on campus
Viewport II: Computer and Internet Concepts for Musicians
- Understand the physical setup of a computer
- Describe the components of a graphical user interface (GUI) including mouse gestures, icons, windows, menus
- Explain important operating system functions such as opening, closing, saving, copying, and formatting
- Link the concepts of files, folders, subdirectories, and volumes to desktop management
- Understand procedures for software backup and experience the process of checking for and preventing viruses
- Experience surfing and searching the web
- Understand data and hardware concepts associated with computer system, networking, and the Internet
Viewport III: Digital Audio Basics
- Gain an understanding of how digital audio is stored and manipulated in a computer
- Learn the capabilities of various Web music software for capturing, storing, and cataloging MP3, WMA, and AAC music files
- Learn the basic features of software for editing digital audio
- Study the different types of effects that can be used to alter digital audio sounds and music productions
- Create a music audio sample and edit and transform the image
Viewport IV: Doing More with Digital Audio
- Understand more advanced concepts of digital audio including surround sound and MPEG audio
- Understand how laser discs are designed and formatted and the difference between CD and DVD discs
- Experiment with using multitrack software for recording and editing digital audio
- Use loop-based sequencing software to create music compositions
- Study mixing and mastering techniques and burn a mix to a CD laser disc
