Notes:
Welcome to MUS 657H. Visit these pages often during the course for more information and reference material on
topics discussed in class. After the course is over, these pages will stay online for you to use for review and further reading.
As we go through the course, we'll cover three of the seven areas of music technology that have been identified by TI:ME to be directly applicable to music instruction in support of the National Standards for Arts Education. (See the Sidebar.)
The three areas of music technology we'll discuss are Instructional Software, Internet & Communications, and Digital Media, and during the week we will cover some concepts you should know and understand as well as introduce skills you should develop in these areas.
During the week, we'll also discuss how competencies in these areas can be used to "teach to the Standards."
The text book for this course is: Technology Strategies for Music Education. Thomas E. Rudolph, Floyd Richmond, David Mash, David Williams. Technology Institute for Music Educators, 2002. It's available on campus at the Post bookstore and there will be time this morning to go and get the book.
Today's Agenda:
- Introductions, overview and class poll
- Introduction to TI:ME and TI:ME certification
- Music Technology Competencies Self-Assessment
- An Overview of the Internet and the World Wide Web
- Using a Web Browser
- Searching the Net
- Authoring Tools and an Introduction to PowerPoint
Today's Assignments:
- Browse some of the links on our home page to get an idea of what's there.
- Read sections 1 and 2 in our course textbook.
- Search the Internet and find five sites you could use in your classroom. Prepare a brief explanation why you chose the site.
- Look through the Web/Internet Lessons Plans found in the Members Only section of the TI:ME Web site and find three that you could use in your teaching.
- Prepare some text for a lesson that you could teach using PowerPoint. Here's the Web version of the PowerPoint demo played in class.
Some terms to remember: World Wide Web, Internet, URL, Search Engine

Notes:
How would use a computer in your classroom? That was a topic that we started to address yesterday and will continue to discuss all through the week. Learning some new "tools" to use in your teaching is what we want to cover.
How would you use the Web in your teaching? Teach a course completly online? Provide ancillary and review material for your classes? Search and find resources to use in your lessons? The examples we saw yesterday of how I use the Web can be found here. Hopefully they give you some idea of the possibilities and maybe give you an idea for something you would want to do.
Today's Agenda:
- Review of yesterday's work
- Questions and Answers
- A look at PowerPoint
- More on searching the Web
- Review of last night's homework
- Multimedia files on the Web -- Audio
- Working with and creating audio files
Today's Assignments:
- Continue to browse some of the links on our home page.
- Read sections 3 and 4 in our course textbook.
- Bring some CDs to work with in class tomorrow.
- If you own a digital camera, bring it to class tormorrow.
- Bring some photos with you.
- (Added after class.) As mentioned in class, look through the Fact and Activity Sheets in Appendix 2

Notes:
Very good work with PowerPoint yesterday. It was good to see how you already wanted to add more than text to your slides -- to create multimedia presentations. (Effective use of multimedia increases retention.)
By the way, we keep using this term "multimedia." Let's give it a brief definition/description -- text, graphics, sound, video and animation.
As we continue to explore how you would use a computer in your classroom and how to use the Net to find resources, today we'll start looking at creating and editing our own media -- especially audio and graphics.
We'll also look at how to create Web pages if you want to expand how you use the Web in your teaching.
Today's Agenda:
- Review of yesterday's work
- Q&A
- An introduction to Digital Media and Multimedia Authoring
- More with PowerPoint
- An introduction to writing Web pages
- More on the Internet
- Creating and editing Audio Files
Today's Assignments:
- Continue to browse the links on our home page.
- Look through the charts in section 5 of the textbook, especially the charts pertaining the using the Internet and Digital Media to teach to the Standards.
- Bring CDs to work with in class tomorrow.
- If you own a digital camera, bring it to class tormorrow.
- Bring some photos with you.
- Read "Multimedia Basics: Understanding Sound" in Appendix 4 of the workbook
- Complete the Searching For Information Activity Sheet. For items 6 to 9, include addresses where one can find recordings of performances on the instrument -- either to purchase or to download (legally).

Excellent work with your projects! I can't wait to see the completed versions.
