Dear Colleague,

I am writing to invite you to participate in the Attitudes about Second-Career Teachers Survey, which I am conducting on a completely anonymous basis with school administrators and teachers in schools across Long Island.  The purpose of this study is to better understand how second-career teachers are viewed in schools, and to learn about your experiences and expert views on the topic.  Your insights and participation are extremely important to me and to the success of this study, but your participation is entirely voluntary.

This anonymous survey will take you only about a half-hour to complete. It includes a series of statements about second-career teachers, and I simply ask that you sort these statements in terms of your level of agreement or disagreement with each of them based on your own views and experiences.

The survey also asks you to provide some very basic background information about your teaching and administrative experience and provides an opportunity for you to offer any other comments or insights about second-career teachers.  This information will only be used to identify patterns of shared views and experiences held by administrators and teachers with similar backgrounds.

As a practicing teacher and doctoral student, I am conducting this survey as part of the research for my doctoral dissertation, and I also hope to report the findings in scholarly and professional publications.  I respect your privacy, and my survey does not ask for your name or the name of your school.  Please be assured that I have no way of knowing who has completed the survey, and your identity and answers to this survey will be completely anonymous.  If you give me permission to use your responses, which I hope you will, they will be reported only in overall average results.

Thank you so much for your consideration and, hopefully, for your participation in this survey!  If you have any questions or would like to discuss the study or survey with me personally, please feel free to email me at coladonato@edresearch.us.

Sincerely,

Joseph A. Coladonato
