Nation's Top Counties Income

The fortunes being made in Silicon Valley draw much attention, but they are not enough to lift the average incomes in that high-technology center into the top tier of the nation's counties, new financial data show.

Five of the 10 counties with the highest average adjusted gross incomes reported on federal tax returns are in the New York area. Only San Mateo County, at the northern edge of Silicon Valley, is in the top 1 percent of the 3,140 counties, according to figures for 1995, the most recent available.

The poorest counties are no longer concentrated in the South but rather in Nebraska, Texas, New Mexico and South Dakota.

A point-and-click map for Internal Revenue Service data on each state and county is at www.trac.syr.edu/tracirs/, the Web site of Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.
