Introduction to Music Technology

The purpose of this exercise is to give you the opportunity to edit a voice recording in Audacity. The key to editing this recording is to be aware of both the sound AND the silence as you edit.

Instructions:

  1. Download this exerciseVoice.zip file into your folder - in the lab, right-click the link and choose Download Linked File As, navigate to your folder and save the file there. Then, double-click the zip file to uncompress it and extract its contents. If you download the above zip file into the Downloads folder, move it to your folder before extracting it.
  2. After extracting the file you should find a file called "count.mp3" in your folder.
  3. Open the file in Audacity and listen to it. You'll hear it's a recording of JM counting from 1 to 10.
  4. Edit the recording, rearranging the numbers (e.g. 1, 6, 4, 2, 7, etc.) while maintaining the rhythm and cadence of the original. (It's very important that you keep the rhythm and cadence the same.)
  5. When done, export MP3 versions of the modified recording in both 128 kbps and 64 kbps bit rates.
    1. File > Export and choose MP3. In the next window set the Format Options to Average, the Quality to 128kbps and the Channel Mode to Joint Stereo. Again, make sure you save the file in your folder.
    2. File > Export and choose MP3. In the next window set the Format Options to Average, the Quality to 64kbps and the Channel Mode to Joint Stereo. Again, make sure you save the file in your folder.
Listen to both files. Do you hear a difference? (For a voice only recording, probably not.)
  6. Submit the 64 kbps version in class.
