Listening to Music "Horizontally" (Hearing the "Tracks") No Dice, Beirut Highway, Flatout BeatZ
As discussed in class... when starting to work in a multitrack environment it's important that you train your ears to hear the differnt tracks as they play together in the overall mix. Instead of hearing the mix as a "block" of sound (vertically), try hearing it as "layers" (horizontally).
As you listen to the above recordings, imagine each new sound/instrument you hear as being on a separate track. Try to visualize what the project file for the song might look like. Do you hear any loops, i.e. musical segments that seem to repeat a lot? Try counting how many different loops you hear — keeping in mind each loop is probably on a separate track. (I think you'll be surprised how quickly your ears adapt to this way of listening to music — listening horizontally.)
How-To Stuff(If you have a good how-to resoruce to add, send the link to JM)
Listening for Form (Hearing the sections of a song) (Created for previous classes) Try to hear the different sections of each song as we did in class.
