Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Piro is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. He also serves on the doctoral faculty for Interdisciplinary Educational Studies where he teaches courses in psychology as well as education policy. His research has focused on issues in curriculum and instruction, teacher practice, the impact of the arts on learning, and issues in brain and learning behavior and their policy implications. He has served in a variety of capacities in the New York City Department of Education including classroom teacher, music teacher, coordinator of a district-wide gifted program, and cultural arts coordinator. He is also a curriculum consultant for the Center for Gifted Youth at LIU. He has served on the New York State AGATE (Advocacy for Gifted and Talented Education) Board of Directors and was a member of an Advisory Committee for the New York State Education Department that established teacher certification guidelines for teachers of the gifted. He has received fellowships and awards from the Japan Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Gilder-Lehrman Foundation, the Getty Center, and the Fulbright organization to develop curriculum and teacher training projects in the humanities and social sciences.
